Democrats in San Mateo elect new President Cherie M. Querol Moreno, Feb 21, 2007 (Philippine News) DALY CITY – The Bay Area Peninsula’s Filipino American “blueblood” have resurged with the election of a new president to complete the 2007 officers of the Filipino American Democratic Club of San Mateo County.
Redwood City-based criminal lawyer Raymond Buenaventura, a former county public defender, was elected by acclamation at a February 3 meeting here. He will join civil engineer Angel Lim, vice president; law office worker Ora Seyler, secretary; and Daly City Park and Recreation commissioner Andre Belarmino, treasurer of the club chartered by the Democratic Party.
“We have an aggressive agenda for the upcoming year,” Buenaventura promised. “We will try to increase our visibility throughout the community by participating in various political and social events, including the Democratic Central Committee. We will actively recruit people in the community with the goal of increasing our membership.”
Colma Vice Mayor Larry Formalejo, Daly City Council member Mike Guingona and former Daly City library commissioner Perla Ibarrientos led the applause that met Buenaventura’s election. Some 40 registered Democrats responded to the call of Alice Bulos, chair emeritus of the California Filipino American Democratic Caucus and first president of the FADC-San Mateo, to get together in the name of political empowerment.
“I’m delighted to have Ray Buenaventura lead us so we can go forward and accomplish our goals and objectives,” said Bulos, de facto club adviser.
Flush from the recent midterm election victories of FilAm candidates she had supported, Bulos was especially fueled by the current leadership in the new U. S. Congress, the historic Speakership of S.F. Rep. Nancy Pelosi and the early declarations of presidential candidacies by New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.
“This is going to be an exciting year for all of us,” Bulos stressed. “We will continue to rally the community to get involved either as voters or candidates, donors and volunteers. We need to take ownership of our country.”
Buenaventura had the very same vision.
“We will engage in candidate development of Filipino Americans who have a desire to run for public office,” said the new FADC president, who relocated recently to the Peninsula from Southern California. “We will engage in a massive voter registration drive to increase voter participation in our communities for the upcoming elections. We will work hard to make sure Filipino Americans have a strong voice and a visible presence throughout the Bay Area.”
